On Black Music...

Museum Africa, on Bree Street in Newtown, recently opened its doors for the International Exhibition Of Black Music. Here, everything from soul to afrobeat to funk, hip hop, jazz and everything in between is explored. As long as it came from a black mind and mouth, it's in here.

The travelling exhibition is an interactive one that asks you to trade in your smart phone at the reception for the exhibition's one. This is so that the exhibition gets all their equipment back but also because the pre-loaded smartphones from the exhibition allow you to unlock a world of gems about black music. Divided into six rooms, the touch screen technology allows you to engage with different aspects like videos, audiovisual poetry and even asks you to physically blow out a candle on the tiny device.

Armed with earphones and a smartphone, you can learn more about everyone from Miles Davis to Ali Farka Toure, Afrika Bambataa, Hugh Masekela, Bob Marley, Nina Simone, Fela Kuti, Stevie Wonder, Tumi And The Volume and loads more. In one room, the four sections of our continent are explored separately, while there is also a room full of Black Music Legends biographies. They are quite short and concise so its not as though you're going to spend aeons at the museum.

But to be honest, the information is overwhelming to the senses - there are over 13 hours of footage - and because it's so insightful, you may want to give it your full attention and make more than one trip to the museum. The entrance fee is R40 and the exhibition runs until 12 December. If you've already been, then let us know what you think.

FRWEDNESDAY MIXTAPE

Happy Hump Day! If you've been reading theblagg or following fratpack (@fratpackmusic) then you already know what frwednesday is all about. If not then do not pass go, do not collect 200 and get the heck off the internet. I'm just kidding. Come back, come back. Now, you all know the hip hop group called fratpack (one word, all lower case), right? For every Wednesday of the past couple of months, they would release a song for their fam. Called frwednesdays, the songs were mostly the two brothers rapping on beats that me far-outed. So it's only fitting that me and Mr Calibre drop a compilation of those joints and a few new ones on a Wednesday. Yep, TODAY. The frwednesday Mixtape is available for free download over HERE and in addition to features by the likes of BIG FKN GUN and Reason as well as far-outing my favourite Zaki Ibrahim song, the mixtape is packed full of surprises. The frwednesday mixtape is the final offering before fratpack's famlove EP is released in the final quarter of this year. Tell all your frwednes! Here's the tracklist:

Make It Happen

Rappers love themselves some Mariah. Last week, the homies BIG FKN GUN released their new joint, Make It Happen - get this: featuring Mariah Carey. Featuring. Tee-hee. I think they actually performed this at Kool Out Lounge in Johannesburg. I could be wrong, it was really warm and someone tried to harass me off the couch I was standing on so details may be fuzzy. Anyway, you can download the joint HERE. You're welcome. How chooot is that cover?

For The Spitters

First they brought you Sebenza and gave everyone with DStv a chance to feel cool with the catchphrase on the tip of their tongues. Now, Okmalumkoolkat (of Dirty Paraffin) and LV bring you Spitting Cobra. Both joints are taken from LV's Sebenza album which is supposed to be released in September. The Spitting Cobra video was shot by Chris Saunders and Malcolm Chen. Let us know what you think.

theblagg Recommends: Childish Gambino

Besides being an awesome actor ( Troy in Community ) Donald Glover is a dope rapper as Childish Gambino, which is a name he found through the Wu Tang Clan name generator. His new album Camp is really dope and we suggest that you chek it out. Here is a performance of "Bonfire" which is one of the songs off Camp. Peep it and let us know what you think.

Tekitha Don't Care

Wu Tang is for the kids. Some of us will be grown ass kids forever, that's fine. But I've never known anyone to like Wu-affiliate, Tekitha, as much as Dude. He went bananas over this Creative Control video. So, blaggers and blaggettes, it's only fair that we share it with you too.

A Solo Medley

Props to Sapatilhas Femininas for the visual

When The Ordinary Girl still had an internet friendly J-O 9and when Solange still had a weave), she came across this, changed the format and shoved it down Dude's ears for dayyyys. No Nonhle. So I thought I might share it with you guys. The sound quality is dodgy at times but hey, she's hella cool so...try and enjoy it.

Jealous down, Erykah Badu is all kinds of magnif. Two years ago, Steven Lopez, an artist who is well known for his After Midnight series of paintings did something really special with the Analogue Girl In A Digital World. Lopez’s series sees him paint vibrant portraits of the artists whose music influences him, while the chosen joints are being played. So when painted Seven’s mommy, he didn’t really know how far the art would go. But Badu actually hooked up with Lopez to sign 100 limited edition prints of the painting to sell in aid of her charity, BLIND aka Beautiful Love Incorporated Non-Profit Development. The After Midnight initiative is quite a cool series featuring the likeness of Sade, Jill Scott and many more soul powerhouses. What do you guys think of the work?

J. Cole, one of our favourite emcees who is yet to drop his debut album, drops a track called "Disgusting" to keep taste buds wet before he drops the album. He says the album is ready, the sigles are ready, the name is dope and the music is amazing!...We'll have to wait and see. Until then, here is "Disgusting" which is also produced by Light Skin Jermaine.

So here is Dr. Dre, Eminem and Skylar Grey( our previous version had Liz Rodriguez, we don't what happend to that) with the new video for "I Need a Doctor"

Yo, Jury!

A lot of "alternative" music lovers are going gaga over this. Bonkers for Yonkers maybe? The Ordinary girl doesn't get the hype. But to each his own, right? What do you all thing about Tyler The Creator? And what about this OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All) movement? Word is they've been around for all of three mixtapes but their sound has finally penetrated everywhere including your momma's house just recently. Here's the Yonkers video if you haven't seen it yet. Be warned, this is not for people who have sensitive stomachs.
