Talk Is Cheap Part Deux

In case you missed the second video that the folks over at Scrambles 4 Money released from their Talk Is Cheap rap battle, Fungus thoroughly handed Snazz D his butt. A disappointment to some who've seen Snazz properly rip cats apart in battles. Anyway, Scrambles 4 Money uploads the videos to their youtube page every Monday so catch up right now.

Tumi vs One-L

Scrambles 4 Money presents Talk Is Cheap was really fun. But you don't have to take our word for it. Here's the video for the most talked about round of the night. The dates for other battle video releases are in the image up top. Be sure to subscribe to the Scrambles 4 Money youtube channel or at least hook them up with a like-nyana on facebook so they can keep bringing us the battles and keep not charging us Rosebank club prices just to get in. Here's Tumi and One-L:

Not To Be Missed

Scrambles 4 Money Presents Talk Is Cheap. Yes ma'am. We know it's super early to be plugging this event, seeing that it only takes place almost a month away from now but better early than late. So, we all saw how things went down between Gin-I-Grindith and Mo Katalyst when they went head to head. If you didn't, you can peep it HERE. This time around, August 18 will see Tumi Molekane go up against One-L. But that's not all. Snazz-D will battle Fungus, then Fusion vs Safar I, Adamus against Hymphatic Thabs and T.OP vs Jaz. I don't know about you but all these rappers are worth every cent of the cover charge - R30 - and more. It almost feels like a concert, doesn't it? Except someone is going home with their tale between their legs. Anyway, here are the deets: the battles take place at Grayscale on De Kort Street in Braamfontein as usual on August 18. Doors open at 7.30pm. Since the store space is small, there will be a limited number of people allowed through the doors so if you want to see some lyrical ass whippings, try to be there earlyish. Also, who is your money on?

PS: The date of the battles keep being moved so if it gets changed again then go shout at Gin-I-Grindith. I dare you. Teehee.

Battling 101

You know theblagg is from the V, right? So we are quite familiar with the havoc that Mo Katalyst (also a Vaal Triangle spitter) can wreak in a battle. You also know that to theblagg, Gin-I-Grindith is one of the illest with it not just in South Africa but peiod. So when a war of words sees these two as adversaries, egos will be bruised and feelings will be hurt but in the end, hip hop will come out triumphant. This is what went down when the Art Of War rap battle was held at Grayscale in Braamfontein this month. theblagg was snowboarding in Lesotho (don't be jealous) so we missed this epic night but thank goodness for youtube. Who do you think held it down better than the other? Mo Katalyst or Gin-I-Grindith?

Whose Rhyme Is It Anyway?

Cool Gin-i-Grindith pic taken from HERE

This week has been a tough one on the bodies. Just ask Dude, he'll tell you. The staying out late, waking up early and eating Rice Krispies in between sipping on Red Bull will catch up with you. Before it's even Friday. Anyway, on Wednesday, Dude and I got to do something really fun. We made our way through that scary ass storm and headed to Grayscale Gallery. Yeah, that's the store/gallery that is owned and run by artist-extraordinair and a cool guy in general, Rusty.

So we were all amped to be attending a show called Whose Rhyme Is It Anyway? Twenty Mr Sweet jelly beans for you if you guessed that it's modelled after the popular US improv show, Whose Line Is It Anyway?, except they use rhyme. And there's no Wayne Brady, thank goodness. The idea was for all the freestyle kings in Johannesburg to come through and play some improv games - NOT battle.

So then the games began. Breeze Yoko was the host for the evening and provided a few laughs. However, it was the rappers who partook in the showing of freestyle finesse that were hilarious. Don't get me wrong, there were some pretty awe-inspiring moments (coming up with GOOD RHYMES off the top of your head is no small feat) and times that warranted a Rap 101 approved "ooooohhh" accompanied with a scrunched up face.

But, at least to The Ordinary Girl, it was the carefree and fun way that the rappers delivered the impromptu scenarios they were placed in that was most enjoyable. Shape Shifter and his dope dreadlocked partner (please forgive me, Breeze didn't tell us your name) were good sports. Really dope gentlemen. But Gin-i-Grindith was king. Maybe it's because he's had overseas experience with the games he asked everyone to partake in. Or maybe it's because he's just that dope.

The Ordinary Girl even got to play along in a 30 Seconds-like segment of the show and Gin-i-Grindith's wit and precision made it easy and friggin cool to guess the words. In general, the crowd in attendance was madd cool. No pretense, everyone was there to share laughs and figure out Whose Rhyme Is It Anyway?

Word is this is meant to be a monthly gig, here's hoping it happens. Support good SA hip hop blaggers and blaggettes.
