We're not even going to bother with the fronting. Watch The Throne has some serious enthusiasts. Some will, as is common practice in hip hop, even go as far as dropping their own rhymes on Jaynye's beats. Not too many folks were feeling Slikour and Kwesta's Otis - sometimes we reach a little beyond our abilities, but what do I know - but maybe people will like Redondo (of Driemanskap) and Manqoba (whom we wrote about HERE) take on Jay and Ye's Niggas In Paris.

Kanyi's Song

When I saw that Kanyi Mavi had put up a track for download and it was called Ingoma the first thing I thought about was a remix to the Thandiswa Mazwai single. And as cool a thought as that is, I'm not bummed that it's not. See, Kanyi has not gone the regular mixtape route of leaking raps on popular beats yet. And on Ingoma (a Zulu word that means song), she comes correct as Miss Solo Dolo, appeasing those who have been itching to hear her spit by herself. Although she's been doing her thing for a minute now, Kanyi reached nationwide recognition thanks to Driemanskap inviting her and Macho to be on their S'phum'eGugs monster joint. Ingoma is proof that Kanyi is dead set on illuminating the game. What do you think of it?

I Will Make It

A few years ago there was a hip hop gig at Carfax – so you know there were backpacks everywhere. Ha! Ok, all jokes aside, it was a nice night out and it was the first time I’d seen Spaza king, Rattex, live. His hypeman on that night was a guy called Kritsi I soon found out. Then the next week, theblagg la familia, C Breezy, and I drove the boys in the yard (at the time we lived in a set of homes that shared a garden in Melville) crazy as we kept singing “jeans and sneakers” all week. This jeans and sneakers thing was from a Rattex verse that Kritsi was adlibbing but he was so into this performance that he dropped it down low to physically show that he was talking about jeans and sneakers.

Except he was wearing shorts.

Anyway, I never forgot dude. This past week, Driemanskap shot their video for I Will Make It and in it they feature Kritsi as a down and out character striving to survive. I think it’s super cool that the cats in Cape Town support each other so much and that Kritsi’s mom is in the fourman crew’s new video too. Here’s Kritsi’s mom working on her scene with the help of Driemanskap’s Dla and one our favourite ladies behind the lense, spo0ky. Below that is a scene where the hood heroes got all of the hood involved. Shout out to Pioneer Unit for the behind the scenes footage.

Manqoba and Driemanskap

Now that you're done wondering if you made the right decision about the person you're with, here's something that warms the heart. Manqoba recently recorded his EP, The Winner, at Red Bull Studios, under Pioneer Unit. He also recorded this track featuring Driemanskap who, by now, you can't claim to not know. The Hood Chronicles: Gugulethu Edition

Finally! The new Driemanskap video featuring Macho and Kanyi just dropped. It’s called S’phum’eGugs which means "We’re from Gugs." Hood anthems have been neglected somewhat in hip hop but this right here just changed all of that. Planet Earth produced the song and all the lyricists came to the party, did they not? Check it out:



theblagg loves, loves, loves this video. We particularly like the last train scenes with everyone bossing up and, our favourite part: the cue cards for the viewers. Pioneer Unit – which is the Cape Town-based label that Driemanskap is signed to - has done it again. The Unit has the likes of Ben Sharpa and Rattex on their roster so you already know what kind of work they’ve been putting in. S’phum’eGugs is the second video from Driemanskap’s album, Ingqabhukil’ Inyongo, and it was directed by the four man army as well as Anton Visser. You cannot help but like these dudes. And if you don’t then they have one line for you: “iDriemanskap kau, word of advice, don’t test now.”

Back To The City

Dominique, Osmic and their friends are at it again. The cause for many a head's excitement, the annual Back to the City, will be held next week Tuesday (April 27) in Newtown. This Freedom Day Festival is an all-day hip hop gig featuring some of the country's biggest names in hip hop.

Expect to see "live music, street art, break-dancing, art installation, skateboarding, film, street soccer, street fashion, gaming, speakers and panel discussions." That means you can watch graff masters do their thing while the likes of Archetypes, Illiterate Skills, Driemanskap, Reason, Mothipa, Zuluboy, Prokid, Tumi, Kenzhero and the Music Atlast DJs are on stage.

The Back to the City Freedom Day Festival is from 10am to 11pm on 27 April under the bridge next to Ritual Stores on the corner of Bree and Henry Nxumalo Street in Newtown. Entrance is R50.
